Gameplay[]
The Ionic Particle Cannon is a 270° forward mounted beam gun that causes good damage and large amounts of ionization and is incapable of destroying it's target. This quality makes it useful for piracy and capturing ships. Despite behaving like a turret, the IPC is classified as a gun meaning that you will still be able to mount turrets with many IPCs installed.
The Ion Cannon is affected by the 1 = X Bug. In other words, all eight of the Manticore's Ion Cannons, for example, deal the same damage as one. This is easily fixed by using a plug-in that sets them to fire simultaneously.
Despite the claim of being the "most accurate energy weapon in the galaxy", the Ion Cannon has inaccuracy. This statement may instead be a reference to its ablility to disable enemy ships instead of destroying them.
The maximum number of Ion Cannons you can fit on a ship is 8, but that goes for both the legal and illegal versions, so it is fully possible for the player to stack up to 16 of them, provided they have enough weapon mounts.

To purchase the legal version, you must have completed part of the Bureau Storyline, specifically Lead Attack on Rebels.
"And you can buy it here without a license, but you had better be wary of Federation scans..."
The Illegal version is available for purchase without any story requirements.
"This particular version looks like it's a few decades old, and has been tinkered with and repaired by a number of different owners. A few backyard tinkerers, and even one major weapon corporations seem interested in buying it, but only so they can pull it apart and have a look at what's been done to it."
The user modified Ion Cannon is simply an Ion Cannon that doesn't trigger the Pirate Enterprise's weapon glow frames. It also doesn't drain fuel.
